Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya, nestled in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, stands as a venerable testament to the country's rich cultural and religious heritage. Located near the ancient capital of Anuradhapura, this Buddhist temple holds a special place in the hearts of believers and history enthusiasts alike. Tantirimale area is situated halfway between Anuradhapura and Mannar, at the river Malwattu Oya which is connecting the ancient Sinhalese capital with Mantota near Mannar. Mantota, then known as Mahathitta, was the principal port for the Anuradhapura kingdom. According to local tradition, Thanthirimale is regarded as one of the 64 sacred sites visited by Lord Buddha during his third sojourn to Sri Lanka. This attribution endows the temple with a profound spiritual significance and contributes to its allure as a pilgrimage destination.
Emperor Ashoka directed his daughter, Bhikkuni Sangamitta, to bring a sprout from the Sacred Bo Tree in Bodhgaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment, to Sri Lanka. Bhikkuni Sangamitta and her entourage allegedly stopped at Thanthirimale on their way to Anuradhapura. The following day, King Devanampiyatissa and his followers welcomed the group to Mahamevna's garden. They discovered that the Sacred Bo sapling had miraculously produced eight additional saplings, one of which was presented to the sage Thivakka. He carried the sapling majestically to Thanthirimale, where it was protected by a circular rock wall.
