Mihintale is only 12 kilometres from the famous city of Anuradhapura which is home to the sacred forest mountain Missaka Pabbatha, where King Devanampiya Tissa met Arhat Mahinda Thera and his companions.
Mihintale means "Plateau of Mihindu" where Arahat Mihindu is said to have called King Devanampiyatissa by his first name in order to prevent him from shooting a deer. There are numerous caves that were previously used by monks. Also, many Stupas, monastic complexes and other sacred sites are surrounded.
Asoka, the Emperor of India who had won a long war, was disappointed and sought Buddha's refuge to heal his inner self. As a devout Buddhist, he allowed his son and daughter, Mahinda and Sangamitta, to be ordained as priest and nun. They later became Arhats.
Mihintale is where the Buddha doctrine was first preached, and it was the beginning of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a revered site in Buddhist philosophy, with pilgrims flocking to it mainly each June. This is because Arhat Mahinda is thought to have arrived from India on Poson Full Moon Poya day, which is in June.
