Mahamevnawa Monastery - Kumbalwela (Ella)

Written By Journey Through Paradise on Thursday, 7 March 2024 | March 07, 2024

Mahamevanawa Buddhist Monasteries were established to benefit the spiritual development of human beings through the teachings of Buddha. Founded in 1999 in Sri Lanka by Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero, it's sole purpose is to spread the original teachings of the Buddha. These monasteries are a warm and welcoming place for everyone to investigate true happiness through Dhamma and meditation.

Here the Buddha’s teachings are presented in modern language that is easy to understand. What makes Mahanevnawa unique is the effort to bring the Supreme Dhamma to listeners in its original form. Because of this, both young and old listen to the Dhamma and practice virtue, concentration, mindfulness and wisdom to realize the Four Noble Truths revealed by the Supreme Buddha.

The Kumbalwela monastery, near Ella and Bandarawela, is home to over 30 Theravada Buddhist monks. They can look out at the busy world below from the top of the mountains. Anyone who makes the trek up the mountain will be rewarded with spectacular views and spectacular spiritual teachings of the Buddha. The construction of the monastery especially the Pagoda is still going on. You can also donate by contacting the authorities of the monastery.

The monks at this monastery are happy to speak and share the teachings they have learned. Meditation techniques include problems when meditating, Buddhist ethics, Buddhist symbols, parts of a monastery, Buddhist chanting, karma and rebirth, Buddhist daily practice, regarding the life of a monk and anything connected with living a good life.

Every evening the monks get together, usually around 6 pm, to have a chanting service. Often local people will join in and you are welcome as well. This is a great way to get an experience of authentic Buddhist culture. If you would like to take part in the meal offering, simply arrive at the monastery and ask where the alms hall is. By that time the devotee offering the food may be doing some chanting at one of the shrines. There will be volunteers who have stayed behind and can give you instructions.
