The ancient Buddhist temple, Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya is located on Nainativu Island in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of the Jaffna Peninsula. The island's name refers to the folklore Naga tribal people who live there.
Regular boat services are available from Punkudutivu's Jetty to Nagadeepa Island. It costs about LKR 50 per person, and the travelling time is around 25 minutes.
Nagadeepa Temple is known as the place where Lord Buddha visited during his second visit to Sri Lanka following five years of enlightenment to mediate and settle a dispute between two Naga tribal kings, Chulodara and Mahodara over the possession of a gem-studded throne.
Upon arriving, Buddha utilized his psychic abilities to appear in the sky and perform various miracles upon seeing the Naga Kings ready for battle. The Nagas were delighted and amazed by this. Once the Naga kings had heard the Dhamma sermons, demonstrating Buddha's profound understanding of harmony and unity, methththa and compassion, they paid homage to Budhha with unwavering faith. Together, they offered him the throne and became devout followers.
The stupa was constructed by the two Naga kings at the site where Lord Buddha preached Dhamma and the gem-studded throne was enshrined in the stupa and it became a place of Buddhist veneration.
Historians have noted that the island Nainativu appears in both ancient Buddhist legends from Sri Lanka, such as Mahavamsa, and ancient Tamil Sangam literature from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, where it was referred to as Manipallavam in Manimekalai. Nagapooshani Amman Kovil is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Nagapooshani or Bhuvaneswari and her consort, Shiva who is named here as Nayinaar. The temple seems to have been mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana.
