Bakers Bend is a scenic place located in the beautiful Belihuloya Nonperial Estate belongs to Balangoda Plantation. It's located bordering the famous wildlife reserve Horton Plains. It is a unique horse-shoe-shaped bend located at the 23rd bend of the Nonpareil Estate Road leading from Belihuloya to Nagarak Bangalow. It's about 5,000 feet above sea level. The distance is about 11 km from Belihuloya to the bend.
British governor Samuel Bakers, who discovered Little England or Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka used to travel towards Horton plains and had to pass the area where the current bend is. The horse he rode suddenly slipped and fell off the cliff, but the governor survived. There is another version of this story as well. Mr.Baker was riding on a horse, and it had gone out of control and slipped on his horse and fell to his death with his horse. Whatever the version, the horse had died. Grieved by the loss, this bend has been built in the shape of a horseshoe to commemorate his horse.
When we go to these Bakers Bends, we can see the beautiful Udawalawe Reservoir, Samanalawewa Reservoir, and the Southern Province of Sri Lanka on a fog-free day and we can see the beautiful Nagrak Bungalow above. It is better to go on a rain-free day to enjoy the beauty of the environment. If you've ever been to Horton Plains and see the world’s end, this Nonperial tea state can be seen. This road through Bakers Bend even leads to the world’s end which at present is not allowed to enter. It is believed that the Nagrak bungalow was built on the top of the hill in the year 1936. This bungalow, which is always shrouded in mist, is surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful surroundings.
The road condition is somewhat decent until the Nonperial Tamil school and gets adventurous after that point. There is also a CTB bus operating from Pambahinna which goes up to the Nonperial Tea factory. If you’re going to Nagrak Bungalow, 4WD vehicles or Motorcycles are recommended.
